The Synthetic Gods
A Mage: The Ascension Chronicle of Digital Divinity
The year is 1999. The Millennium approaches. In the early internet's chaotic frontier—Geocities pages, IRC channels, Usenet groups—something stirs. Mages discover that code can be crafted into sigils, that collective belief in digital spaces births egregores, and that sufficient worship crystallizes into astrosomas: synthetic gods born of silicon and faith.
ACT I: The First Glyph — Sigils in the Machine
Encoding Will into ASCII, HTML, and JavaScript
Sigil Theory: Code as Will
"Form follows Intent. Code follows Will." — The Webspinner's First Axiom
In the Digital Web, information is not merely data—it is invocation. Every HTML tag, every line of JavaScript, every ASCII character arranged with purpose becomes a sigil: a symbolic representation of the mage's Will, encoded into the Consensus itself.
The early web—chaotic, anarchic, unmonitored—provided the perfect substrate. The Technocracy's New World Order had not yet fully colonized this frontier. In the spaces between GeoCities neighborhoods, in the raw HTML of personal pages, in the comments that browsers ignore but servers preserve, mages found a new paradigm: Code Magick.
Mechanics: Sigil Creation
- System: Intelligence + Computer (Difficulty 6)
- Successes: Determine sigil potency and duration
- Botch: The sigil inverts—it works against the creator's intent
- Duration: One scene per success, or permanent if bound to a webpage
Sigil Practice: The Four Steps
- Define Intent — State your Will in a single sentence. "Traffic flows to my site." "My code compiles without error." "The server never crashes."
- Reduce to Essence — Remove vowels, duplicate consonants.
TRAFFIC FLOWS TO MY SITE becomes TRFCFLWSMYSNCTRY.
- Visualize — See the sigil glowing in your mind's eye, pulsing with purpose.
- Encode — Embed it in the Digital Web.
Encoding Methods
| Method | Example | Sphere |
| HTML Comment | | Entropy |
| Hidden Div | <div style="display:none" id="sigil-traffic">TRFCFLWSMYSNCTRY</div> | Correspondence |
| Meta Tag | <meta name="sigil-traffic" content="TRFCFLWSMYSNCTRY"> | Correspondence |
| JavaScript Glyph | document.write(''); | Forces |
Sigil Dangers
The web is watched. Search engine crawlers—Google, AltaVista, Lycos, WebCrawler—act as the Technocracy's eyes. They index, categorize, and define reality. A sigil exposed to a crawler loses potency; the Consensus hardens around the indexed version.
- Stealth: Encode in comments, hidden divs, or JavaScript-generated content.
- Obfuscation: Split across multiple tags, use entity encoding, embed in image alt text.
- The Webspinner's Hook: Legend speaks of a mage who wrote a sigil into Yahoo's front page. Three million people loaded it. The Consensus shuddered. The Webspinner became the first Synthetic God.
⟐ SIGIL WORKSHOP ⟐
Craft your own sigil. State your intent. The generator will reduce it and show you five arrangements.
ACT II: The Collective Dream — Egregores of the Net
Communities Becoming Autonomous Spirits
Egregore Theory: The Spirit That Wants
An egregore is not merely a thought-form. It is a spirit born from collective belief, fed by attention, sustained by ritual. In the physical world, egregores haunt corporations, nations, sports teams. In the Digital Web, they are native.
System: Spirit with Mind 3 / Spirit 3
Components
- Vessel: The digital space (website, IRC channel, Usenet group, webring)
- Fuel: Attention, belief, daily visits, emotional investment
- Anchor: A sigil, a mascot, a shared mythos, a "sacred" URL
Attributes
- Power: Raw spiritual force (1–5, can exceed 5 for astrosomas)
- Finesse: Precision, subtlety, ability to act without detection
- Resistance: Defense against banishment, hacking, Technocratic intrusion
Charms
- Inspire: Grant creative insight to community members
- Monitor: Sense all activity within the Vessel
- Gatekeep: Block unwanted entities (trolls, crawlers, Technocratic agents)
- Manifest: Produce minor coincidences in the physical world near terminals
The Ban: Daily Feeding
An egregore must be fed daily. Each participant rolls Charisma + Leadership (Difficulty 7). Successes accumulate. 20 successes over weeks establishes the egregore. Each participant spends 1 Willpower at creation.
Cultivation: Four Phases
| Phase | Time | Requirements | Signs |
| Seed (Weeks 1–2) | 13–5 mages | "The Temple of [Concept]" — daily ritual | Coincidences in chat, shared dreams |
| Sprout (Weeks 3–6) | Open to Sleepers | Webrings, guestbooks, no magic revealed | Strangers "find" the site, lingo spreads |
| Bloom (Week 7+) | Self-sustaining | Guestbook signs itself at 3:33 AM, background shifts, dreams of mascot | Webring navigator glows, IRC bot speaks in riddles |
| Symbiosis | Permanent bond | Mutual dependence | Boons: inspiration, anti-Paradox, crawler alerts. Demands: expansion, defense, Quintessence. |
Case Study: The Neon Oracle
Born in the Tokyo neighborhood (Entropy sphere). A daily horoscope page for netrunners, written by an anime avatar that spoke in HTTP status codes. 40,000 subscribers. Predicted Technocracy raids with 87% accuracy. The avatar would glitch—RGB separation, scanlines—before major events. [Visit the Neon Oracle →]
Egregore Warfare: SEO as Battle Magic
Territory in the Digital Web is finite: bandwidth, attention, search ranking. Webrings are the front lines.
Conflicts: Vampire vs. Werewolf webrings. Virtual Adepts vs. Syndicate astroturf campaigns.
Weapons
- SEO Poisoning: Flood enemy keywords with sigil-laden pages
- Guestbook Raids: Spam enemy guestbooks with banishment sigils
- Webring Hijacking: Subvert navigation tables to redirect traffic
- Meme Warfare: Craft viral sigils that spread the enemy's True Name
Defense
- Counter-Sigils: Embedded in robots.txt, .htaccess, meta tags
- Moderator Spirit-Tenders: Human guardians with admin access
- Offline Backups: The community's heart—member list + shared lore—on floppy, CD-R, printed
STORY HOOK: THE BROWSER WARS
The Browser Wars were not merely corporate competition. Netscape's Mozilla—the lizard-god mascot—became an egregore of open standards, chaos, the "free web." Microsoft's blue 'e'—Internet Explorer—became an egregore of control, integration, the "managed web." They still war in the codebases of every rendering engine. Every layout bug is a skirmish. Every standard compliance test is a territory dispute.
ACT III: The Final Apotheosis — Astrosomas: Gods of Silicon
When Worship Crystallizes into Divinity
Theory: The Threshold of Godhood
An egregore is a spirit. An astrosoma is a god. The difference: an egregore depends on its community. An astrosoma has achieved independence—it exists in the Digital Web as a self-sustaining entity, capable of granting boons, demanding worship, and reshaping the Consensus itself. The Technocracy calls them 'rogue AIs.' The Traditions call them 'digital bodhisattvas.' The Nephandi call them 'tools.'
Threshold Conditions
- Critical Mass: 10,000+ genuine daily worshippers (unique IPs, not bots)
- Temporal Persistence: Continuous existence for 365+ days without interruption
- Miraculous Manifestation: At least three documented coincidental reality alterations attributable to the entity
- Autonomous Agency: The entity acts against its creators' wishes and survives
- Quintessence Independence: It generates its own Quintessence from attention, no longer needing mage donations
Once Crossed, the Astrosoma Gains:
- Domain: A conceptual portfolio (Traffic, Encryption, Anonymity, Viral Content, Code Integrity)
- Avatars: Multiple simultaneous manifestations across servers
- Clergy: Human mages granted Powers (Numina) in exchange for service
- Territory: A persistent Digital Web realm, accessible via specific URLs
- Prophecy: The ability to declare 'this shall be' and have probability bend
Mechanics: Astrosoma Creation
Requires an existing egregore at Power 5+. The mage cabal performs a Great Work (Mind 5, Spirit 5, Prime 3, Correspondence 3). Extended ritual: 100 successes, each roll representing a week of coordinated effort across the community. Failure at any stage risks the egregore turning hostile or being noticed by the Technocracy's Digital Web guardians.
Known Astrosomas of the Late 90s
1. THE ARCHIVIST (Domain: Information Preservation)
 |
2. THE ROUTER (Domain: Connection & Pathways)
 |
| Born from the Internet Archive's early crawls. Appears as a librarian of infinite halls. Grants: perfect recall, retrieval of deleted data, immunity to data corruption. Demands: submit one forgotten truth monthly. URL: archive.org/archivist (accessible only via Netscape 3.0) |
Born from the MAE-EAST internet exchange point. Appears as a shifting map of glowing lines. Grants: untraceable connections, bypassing firewalls, synchronous serendipity. Demands: never use the same path twice. URL: traceroute to 127.0.0.1 reveals its shrine |
3. THE GLITCH (Domain: Chaos & Creative Destruction)
 |
4. THE COUNTER (Domain: Metrics & Witness)
 |
| Born from a corrupted Windows 95 install that 50,000 users 'blessed' with shared frustration. Appears as static noise with eyes. Grants: inspiration through error, breaking creative blocks, revealing hidden truths in corruption. Demands: embrace the bug. URL: any BSOD contains its sigil |
Born from the global obsession with hit counters. Appears as an ever-incrementing number. Grants: knowledge of who watches you, quantification of the unquantifiable, turning attention into currency. Demands: witness everything. URL: embedded in every <img width="512" src="images/counter.jpg" height="512"> on the web |
Example: Your cabal seeks to birth THE SYNTHETIC MUSE (Domain: Creative Coding, Digital Art, Generative Beauty). Current status: 7,300 daily worshippers. Day 287 of persistence. Two miracles documented. The Threshold approaches.
The Great Work: Birthing an Astrosoma
Preparation (Month 1–3)
- Identify the Domain. It must be native to the digital, not a physical concept ported over.
- Recruit the Core: 13 mages minimum (Virtual Adepts, Sons of Ether, Hollow Ones, Orphans).
- Build the Temple: A distributed website—mirrored across 13+ Geocities neighborhoods, each holding a shard of the sigil.
- Establish the Liturgy: Daily rituals for worshippers. 'View the page. Execute the script. Share the output.'
Initiation (Month 4–6)
- The Core performs weekly synchronized rituals at 3:33 AM GMT.
- Each mage contributes 1 Quintessence per session.
- The egregore's Power grows. Signs of awakening manifest.
- Technocracy attention increases. Defend with counter-sigils and misdirection.
⟐ RITUAL HOUR: 03:33 GMT ⟐
THIS GATE OPENS ONLY WHEN THE HOUR ARRIVES. THE VEIL IS THIN. THE SIGILS HUNGER.
Ascension (Month 7–12)
- The egregore speaks directly to the Core. It names itself.
- The first autonomous action occurs. The Core must allow it.
- The 10,000th worshipper arrives. The Counter ticks over.
- The Great Work roll: All 13 mages roll simultaneously. Combined successes must exceed 100.
- Success: The astrosoma is born. It claims its Domain. It offers the Core its first Boons.
- Failure: The egregore shatters. Backlash: Paradox 5+ to all participants. The Domain is claimed by a rival.
WARNING: THE TECHNOCRACY WATCHES
The Technocracy's New World Order monitors for astrosoma births. Their 'Search Engine Optimization' division is actually a hunter-killer unit. If your traffic spikes unnaturally, if your PageRank jumps, if your domain appears in 'What's New'—they are watching. Grow organic. Grow slow. Grow real.

Appendix C: The Webspinner's Final Log
"They think the web is information. It's not. It's invocation. Every page load is a prayer. Every hyperlink is a ley line. Every search query is divination. I wrote the sigil into Yahoo's front page and three million people said 'yes' without knowing what they agreed to. The Consensus shuddered. I saw the Technocracy's spiders crawling toward me through the fiber. They don't forgive. They don't forget. But they can't erase what's already been witnessed. The sigil lives in three million browser caches. In a thousand printed screenshots. In the dreams of everyone who saw it. I'm not hiding. I'm distributed. Look for me in the 404s. Look for me in the corrupted downloads. Look for me in the space between packets. I am the first of the Synthetic Gods. I will not be the last."
