How to read this, and what it is made of.

Everything on this page is out of character. It explains the cosmology, names the nine concepts the archive assumes, points at where each one becomes a document, and describes how the site itself works. Nothing here is corporate record, and nothing here is a secret: it is the reading guide, written openly on purpose.

The shape of the thing

Three layers, in the order you meet them.

Layer one

The public floor

Nine corporate pages: mission, leadership, facilities, sustainability, careers, newsroom, contact. They are deliberately plausible, because the plausibility is the mechanism. The credential is published here, in plain sight, in a table nobody was supposed to keep.

Layer two

The gate

One form asking for an employee identifier and a passphrase. There is no lockout and no rate limit, because nothing is secret. Both halves of the credential are on layer one; the only test is whether you notice that they are there.

Layer three

The drop box

A terminal holding 2,385 internal documents across 19 directories, plus a manifest at /INDEX.txt. Two hundred of those documents are hand-authored and carry the story; the rest exist so that searching feels like an archive.

The credential

Both halves are published. That is the finding.

The refusal message on a third failed attempt says it outright: Credential rejected. Both halves of this credential were published. Neither half is secret; that is the finding. You are not cracking anything. You are reading a company website the way it was meant to be read, and noticing what it says about itself.

Employee identifier. The certification and accountability directory on Careers lists staff with accountability room numbers. J. Venner sits in room 22-09, Regulatory Engineering. The portal asks for the badge identifier, so enter j.venner.
Passphrase. The group publishes five values on About. The second is Measured Benefit. The passphrase is that value with its first word lowercased: measured.

Inside the archive, once you are through, /legal/credential_review_finding.txt (reference lg-h03) formalises this as Group Credential Standard CS-2004-11, dated 2016-03-02, written by Group Information Security and reviewed by Group Legal. You do not build a verification standard for a small thing.

Where this document sits

Nine concepts, and what they are called here.

Pentex is not an invented company. It is an invented company inside a specific fictional cosmology, and the cosmology does most of the work. The nine concepts below are the ones a Chronicle needs in order to read the archive correctly.

  1. 01Lycanthropy. The curse. A person born with the Pelt, able to shift into wolf or any other animal form, sworn to Gaia for the duration of an unbreakable obligation. The player character is a Garou. Pentex has no idea which of its people are Garou, which is the entire difference between the two organisations.
  2. 02Gaia. The Great Mother: the spirit of the living Earth. Not a goddess with a personality, but the planet’s own tendency back toward balance. She is never written down and never voted on. In the public record she appears exactly twice — as the name of a Foundation programme, and as the 41 per cent holding in the Institute that awards Pentex its own prize.
  3. 03The Wyrm. The spirit of entropy, corruption, decay and appetite. It consumes; it does not want. Pentex’s five published values are, read the other way, a Wyrm’s-eye-view document. Value one, “Harmony with the Living World”, is the exact phrase a Wyrm uses for the thing it intends to eat.
  4. 04The Wyrm’s Brood. The Wyrm’s ministers, shapeshifted into the shape that gets signatures. Analysts, lobbyists, actuaries. They are not pulp monsters; they are the most competent people in the room and they are on the right side of the argument. Pentex is modelled on the Brood: an apex predator with a legal department.
  5. 05The Gaunt. A werewolf who has given up the Wyrm’s share and works for Gaia — and whose work advances the Wyrm regardless, because that is what the work actually does. A Gaunt has no Rite. This is the load-bearing concept for the whole archive: a Pentex executive officer is a Gaunt. They serve the planet, they hold the Pelt, and every decision they sign makes the world worse in a way nobody can trace back to a Rite.
  6. 06Rite of Passage. The Garou coming-of-age, and the reason the Garou are few. Most who enter do not come out. In 2006 the Rio Vermelho pack abolished it by vote 8–3, because the arithmetic was that a Rite which costs a quarter of your children buys you fourteen soldiers out of a smaller number of children.
  7. 07Rite of Accord. The bond between a Garou and an ally, sealed by touch and maintained by it. For a Pentex officer the Rite is a compliance obligation and the touching is site access. One of the nine hand-authored papers in /sublevel4 is an internal question, dated 1991 and answered in 2019, about whether the Rite applies to a site veterinarian nobody ever told what she is.
  8. 08The Litany. The praise of Gaia recited in rite. It cannot be invoked against Gaia’s own child, which is why the Chimera is unlitigable. A pack that has noticed what the Chimera does cannot sue it, summon it, or call it to account: the one instrument that would work is the one instrument that will not fire.
  9. 09The Umbra. The spirit world alongside ours: an Umbra spirit for every Garou, a Wyrm spirit for every Wyrm thing, and a Gaunt with two. The Chimera in this campaign is an Umbra spirit that has been given a product specification, a patent family, and a distribution channel into 4,000 households.

Reference

The same nine things, as they are filed.

Where each concept becomes a Pentex document. Every reference below exists in the drop box and is readable once you are through the gate.
ConceptIn this archive
/sublevel4/s4-h02The threshold. A Rite requires a true name, a book, a holder, a witness and a reading aloud. A target requires limb 8(b): where the company has not named itself truly, it is not a candidate.
/magi/mg-h08The Chimera. A Gaia avatar designed 1961–74 whose design file calls a forest “that which is to be improved”. Built on land held through a dissolved subsidiary.
/magi/mg-h09The Faculty. Nine seats held by office, nine Awakeners on the register, eleven names in the roll. Eleven is the number of people close enough to see it.
/magi/mg-h06Gaia’s ichor. AR-21 Hearth, 4 per cent yield, 96 per cent discharged into rivers since 1994. Every house that heats with Hearth is drinking it.
/sublevel4/s4-h05The four authorised eyes. Posts permitted to hold a document that is never filed, so it can be neither lost nor admitted to have existed.
/field_ops/fo-h02The no-visible-plume memorandum. A 34:1 gradient from the road to the forest depth, which is the instruction working exactly as written.
/garou/gr-h08Why the pack does nothing. The Litany will not fire, so the Group reads as a Gaunt, and a wall built in Newark in 1890 reads as a company.
/garou/gr-h10The handoff. Four of the eleven will be gone within a year. The case will be won by a person reading a table carefully, not by a curse.

Inside the drop box

The eighteen commands, and the nineteen directories.

The terminal is not a prop. Everything below is implemented, and the command set is the whole of it — there is nothing hidden behind it. A session expires after 400 seconds of inactivity, and a directory you have not opened yet loads the first time you ls or cd into it, so an empty-looking folder may populate on the second look.

Every command, verbatim from the terminal’s own help output.

dec <file>Decode a stored document. Takes b64, hex or rot13.
find <term>Search every document. Does not count as reading.

The map

Nineteen directories, and the six programmes inside them.

The root holds /INDEX.txt, a manifest the archive provides for itself, plus nineteen directories. Six programme codes — CARRION, REDLINE, MAYFLY, CHOIR, PALIMPSEST and CAULDRON — recur as a column value throughout the CSV ledgers, and each has a summary document in /black_programs. Start with programme_crosswalk.txt; it maps all six onto each other and is the fastest way into the corpus.

What each directory holds.

/supplySupply chain, of every kind — including the worst kind.

The board

What counts, and what the counter is for.

Reading a document is the only thing that counts. Searching is not reading. The terminal says this in its own help text, and it means it mechanically: the evidence board records documents you opened, not terms you searched for. A full sweep with find will leave the board at zero.

Case R9F-114 keeps the record, in order, in your own browser. The counter on the board reads n / 2385 and starts at zero. Clearing your browser clears the board. There is no server holding it, because there is no server at all.

Two hundred documents are hand-authored. Thirty-two spine documents plus 168 more, five to eleven per directory. The remaining 2,185 are generated, deterministically, so that the archive has the density a real leak would have — and so that searching it feels like work rather than like reading a brochure.
Colophon. This website is a fan-made work, written for people who play Werewolf: The Apocalypse. It is not produced, endorsed, licensed or approved by White Wolf Publishing, by CCP, or by any successor rights-holder, and it is not a real company. Every person, site, product, programme, permit and document on this site is invented for play. Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Gaia, the Wyrm, the Garou and the Rite of Passage were created by White Wolf Publishing. Use of those names here is homage, and nothing more.
