PERSONAL HISTORY
Martin Hellman co-invented public-key cryptography with Whitfield Diffie in 1976. While Diffie focused on the key exchange protocol, Hellman explored the mathematical foundations: trapdoor functions—easy to compute one way, computationally infeasible to reverse without the secret.
Hellman's insight: multiplication is easy. Factoring is hard. Exponentiation is easy. Discrete log is hard. The trapdoor is the secret that makes the hard direction easy. RSA built an empire on this. The Technocracy built surveillance on this. The Cypherpunks built freedom on this.
He co-authored the first paper on public-key cryptography. He mentored Merkle. He debated the NSA on key lengths. He's spent 40 years proving that computational hardness is the only thing between privacy and total surveillance.
CURRENT AGENDA
- Prove P ≠ NP (The ultimate trapdoor proof)
- Design post-quantum trapdoors (Lattices, codes, hashes)
- Audit RSA key generation for entropy failures (Common)
- Remind the world: "The trapdoor hides more than keys. It hides intent."
RELATIONSHIP MAP
| NPC | Relationship | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diffie | Co-Inventor / Partner | 40 years of collaboration. Diffie-Hellman. Forever linked. |
| Merkle | Peer | Merkle trees. Trapdoor functions. Different primitives. |
| Rivest/Shamir/Adleman | RSA Trio | Hellman reviewed their paper. "It works. But the patent..." |
| The Architect | Adversary | Architect wants trapdoor escrow. Hellman: "No master keys." |
