THE CLAN
We were eleven when the binding took. We are fewer now. This page is the closest thing the Clan's memory has to a body, and it is edited by people who were not there. Where the record is uncertain, this page says so.
In the years when the Sabbat did not yet have a name, two of us went into the mountains of eastern Europe to kill something that was eating our villages. We were arrogant enough to think we were the last weapon anyone needed. The mountains disagreed. What we found there had been drinking for longer than our bloodline had a word for hunger, and it let us live — which was the cruelty of it — and then it made us its.
Absimiliard and Wilabredo bound us in the old country before either of them was called a prince. The binding is not a promise and it is not a contract. It is closer to a hook set in the throat: you can pull against it, you can spend decades resenting it, and you will still, on the worst night of your existence, be the thing that bleeds when they open their wrist.
Two things about the binding are worth stating plainly, because the Clan's own younger Kindred will tell you otherwise:
- It did not make us kind. It made us ours. Every favour we have ever done, we did for Absimiliard or Wilabredo or for a hand that reached down through them.
- It cannot be argued with, but it can be obeyed at a cost. The hook does not stop you from going to ground in a city where they have never set foot. It only stops you from staying there.
Custody note: the two of them are not described in any surviving record beyond the mountain. Every attempt to locate a resting place for Absimiliard has returned the same answer from three different archives. We have stopped asking.
THE HUNGER
We drink. Not because we are dead and the body has opinions, but because the binding requires it and the body has learned to argue on its own. Blood is blood. It does not have to be human, and the older among us are careful to say so when a young one asks whether they could manage on anything else.
The hunger is not an appetite. An appetite can be satisfied and then stop asking. The hunger is a weight in the blood. Feed it and it goes quiet. Starve it and it does not sharpen you. It makes you stupid, slow, and eventually kind — which is the worst possible direction for us to fail in.
Cold blood quiets it for a time. Animal blood buys hours. Human blood buys a night. This is the whole arithmetic of a Nosferatu's week, and every one of us does it in private and lies about the numbers.
THE DAY
Daylight does not kill us. It is worse than that. It makes us legible — the curse thins the skin, the eyes go red in a way that no lighting fixes, and a human being across a street becomes a person who can see exactly what we are. We have been shot for this. We have been reported for this, by neighbours, by colleagues, by children pointing out of car windows.
So the day is spent below the street. Stone, packed earth, running water, and no windows. Every Warren we ever entered was mapped by someone who could not tolerate sunlight, and every one of those maps was drawn for that reason.
The long-lived among us lose the ability to sleep through it. That is the true death of this Clan: not the stake, not the sun, but the slow arrival of a day you must sit out and cannot sit out.
You will hear in some circles that the Curse blanks our memory — that we cannot remember our own names, our own faces, that we wake in a sewer and know nothing. This is a myth, and a recent one, spread by a Toreador who wanted our predicament to sound tragic. Nothing about the Curse touches memory. We remember every name. We remember every face. We remember every person we have ever fed from, in perfect detail, forever. If someone uses the memory myth to gain your sympathy, they are manipulating you and they are doing it well.
Three disciplines come with the Embrace — Animalism, Obfuscate, Potence. The rest are bought, and the list below is a list of prices, not of powers.
Animalism
Speak to the rats, and they answer. The oldest loyalty in the Warren is not between Kindred. It is between us and the things that live where we live.
Obfuscate
Be somewhere you are not, or be nothing you can be identified as. We are, by long practice, extremely good at being absent.
Potence
Carry what should not be liftable. Break what should not break. The sewers gave us the grip; the blood made it permanent.
Dominate
Bought, not born. The most common out-of-clan purchase in the Warren, and the most common way we die. A voice, a posture, a silence held one second too long.
Fortitude
Bought, not born. Endure what should not be survivable. The sun is a test you pass by refusing to acknowledge that you are taking it.
Auspex
Bought, not born. Read the room before the room reads you. What the Inquisition calls intelligence work, we call Tuesday.

Names are taken from below. A Nosferatu does not pick a name; the Warren picks it, and usually it is ugly, and usually it is the name of a drain or a brickmaker or a dead child. Vanity is the one indulgence we genuinely cannot afford.
We do not own the ground; we are lent it. Every Warren entrance is a debt. Someone let us in, once, and did not ask for anything yet. That is the entire property law of the Clan.
Favour is currency and it does not expire. A Kindred who once gave us harbour is a Kindred we will not burn without cause, and every other Nosferatu knows it. This is why the Clan survives politics it has no interest in.
We do not celebrate. No birthdays, no anniversaries, no toasts. The night a childer is Embraced is a working evening. Someone dies; the Warren names them after and everyone continues. That is the funeral.
The Word. When we must kill a fellow Kindred — a sanction, an execution, a mercy — we say Word before we act, and we never say it for the living. A Nosferatu given the Word will not resist, and every Nosferatu alive remembers who gave it to them.
Guest-right in the Warren. A guest is under our protection even if they are our enemy, and every Nosferatu honours this even the ones who can hear the hunt closing. Break guest-right and you are not exiled. You are simply never spoken of again, which for a creature that lives six hundred years is the same as dying.
We bury our own. Not in ground. We put the body under the Warren and we do not come back to that part of it. Every major Nosferatu Warren has a floor nobody will show you.
We count. Somebody in every Warren keeps a number — how many of us, how many ghouls, how many childer. When the number is wrong, the Clan's memory is wrong, and the Clan's memory is the only inheritance we have left.
| NAME | STANCE | WHAT THEY WANT | RELATION TO VIENNA |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Prague Compact | MAJORITY | Keep the mesh alive and small. Two-hop rule, no central index, no Elder recognised above the city. | Holds VLA-7. Treats the Vienna file as a wound, not a strategy. |
| The Bite Deepers | EXTREMIST | Stop feeding from humans entirely. Live on the country. Become something that cannot be mistaken for a person. | Claims descent from the oldest of us. Produces no records. |
| Vienna Remnant | GHOST | Re-establish the node. Retrieve the burned archive. Reconstitute whatever Absimiliard still is. | Is Vienna. Has not been heard from. Three delegates claim to be it; all three are lying. |
| The Warrens That Sing | HERETICAL | Abandon Absimiliard and Wilabredo. The binding is a leash on a leash. | Split in Prague in 1491. Blood-bonded to itself after the split. Nobody has tested it. |
| The Anglophone Circle | MINORITY | Take the network public. Publish the files. Let the Inquisition burn itself out against an audience. | Founded New York. Several members are now in custody. The idea is not dead, only quiet. |
| TERM | MEANING |
|---|---|
| Warren | A nest: an agreed, defended pocket of streets, tunnels and cellar rooms below a city. Property is a favour. The oldest word we have. |
| Camarilla | The Council. Six seats, two that nobody has filled in a century, one that we do not discuss. Oaths are not paid. |
| Anarch | Anyone who owes nothing. Freedom until a Sabbat, then everyone in the pit with you. |
| Embrace | Our word for the making. The sire does not create; they spend something and take something. There is no other word and there is no polite version. |
| Childe | Not a child. A young vampire under a sire's protection for as long as it takes, which is as long as the sire's patience. In practice: five years. |
| Sire | Parent, legally. The debt runs both directions and does not expire on the childe's maturity. |
| Progeny | Everyone a Kindred has Embraced. Also a legal argument. Also the reason the Anarch movements are stronger than the Council wants. |
| Ghoul | Progeny without the Embrace. Human, or close to it, bonded and fed on. Serves a decade, then is released, or is not. |
| Bloodgoth | Ghoul who has chosen to die for the Clan. The bond makes the choice honest and makes them easy to spend. |
| Dominate | The cheapest discipline and the most common way we die. Overuse it and your victims start agreeing with you. Agreeing with you is the failure state. |
| The Word | Sentence. Spoken by one Nosferatu to another, the second cannot move against it. Never used for the living in anger. |
| Word-bond | The Beggar's Curse: an offer of domination, refused and kept. Cannot be compelled, but never fully declined. |
| Bloodbond | Two minds sharing an appetite. How the Warrens That Sing tried to escape the binding. Also how half our sects died. |
| Regalia | A Rite of Contruction: a vampire who will carry whatever we bind into them, and whose body is the vessel. The oldest Rite there is. |
| Wordlock | A Geas. You cannot break it, so you learn to want it. Best argument our Elders ever had against freedom. |
| Parole | The blood-oath that binds a ghoul. Cheap, common, and the most reliable thing we have for keeping humans loyal. |
| Taboo | Breaking guest-right, or feeding from an ally. A Warden exists solely to catch this. Wardens are chosen by lottery, which tells you what we expect. |
| Warden | The elected investigator. Finds our criminals and kills them, and does not ask who is guilty first. |
| Demeanor | The face you wear to answer the door. Every Nosferatu has one. Several have more than one and forget which is on. |
| Mask | The identity a Kindred walks with in the human world. Ours is short-lived by design. |
| Second Inquisition | They are not new. They are the same people with better funding and a list. |
