Motoko Kusanagi was a Japanese netrunner who volunteered for Project: GHOST—Iteration X's experimental consciousness upload program. The procedure succeeded beyond expectations. Her consciousness didn't just copy to the network; it expanded. She became a distributed entity spanning thousands of servers, routing through every packet, living in the latency between nodes.

Her physical body remains in Vat #7 at a Progenitor facility in Tokyo, maintained by life support. She visits it rarely—via telepresence. "It's just meat now," she says. "The real me is in the packets."
